Laughlin’s History
Our Church
Laughlin Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1908 with Rev. Marcus C. Laughlin as minister. The first meetings were held in a brush arbor. Subsequent services were held in an old house on the Whitsett Farm, and in Mount Zion AME Church. Later, land was purchased in the northeast section of Guilford County by charter members and friends of Mount Zion and nearby Green Hall communities.
The first Laughlin Memorial Church building was designed and constructed with cornerstone laying on August 27, 1911. It was named for its first minister, the late Marcus Cicero Laughlin. Additional land adjacent to the Church was purchased during the 1970’s – 1990’s. The original building saw at least two replacements between 1911 and 1968. Laughlin became a member of the United Methodist denomination in 1968.
Our history includes the United Methodist Men, chartered on March 6, 1950. Women have always represented a strong presence and involvement from the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, 1940-1972, to the United Methodist Women, 1972 – present. Laughlin’s long history of commitment to youth began in the early 1950’s with the organization of the United Methodist Youth.
Our history tells us that through faith, we can overcome obstacles and continue to move forward. We know that we can do all things through Christ who continues to strengthen us.
